Academic Challenge/ In the Know season is upon the new team, and we've started out strong in A Tri meet with schools which will convienently be sensored to be called A, B, and C schools. I'm a team captain, and Capt. and Zoo, along with morethanme and the anonymous kinjruh make up a small part of our team.
Academic Challenge is a game of intellect and knowledge, as two teams of four players apiece battle it out in 3, 10-minute maches where each team will try to answer as many questions they can. If your team gets a question right, you get 10 points. If your opponents get a question wrong, you have the chance for a rebound, which is worth 5 points if answered correctly. The true skill of the game is to have a team that is most balanced, where at least one person in the group has Spanish, one has French, one has a grasp of play and english literature, one with Calculus and Physics, etc. Thus, a player with Spanish, Calculus, and Organic Chemistry is a more valuable player than one with just Spanish. However, you have to make sure you have a balanced team. There isn't any use of having 3 French players in, unless they all have special other parts to contribute like biology or geography.
Some questions are as simple as factoring X^2 + X. Others are about geography, history, english, spanish, french, german, calculus, physics, biology, chemistry, recent events, politics, etc.
At the beginning of each game, a team will call a coin flip to take the first or last question. If you take first question, you go first, and if you take last, then you always get the last question at the end of the game, even if time is up.
Our first game, VS. C.
A close game here, starting with the C team at a distinct advantage over our team. As the matches wind down, the AC team blazes through a series of recent events and biology questions, ending the game in a score 200 us to 195 team C. The game isn't over yet, because Team C picked the last question, and our question was the last one. Everyone on our team was biting their nails as the reader asks a question about Godfather and Godfather II. They don't get it, and we go on to victory, 200-195. As we are about to see, this team is the strongest at the meet.
Second game with team A.
Starting with a secondary team, we blaze through the first round with a 90-40 lead. Feeling confident, we let some of our younger members step in to get some experience, and bring scores up to 125 - 60 in the second match. Main team subs in for the final match and goes to a sweet victory at 160 - 80.
Final, and Third game with Team B.
Team B has a large team of over 15 players, but that doesn't mean they have a good starting line up. Starting off strong, our team brings the score to 60 to 30 in the first round. We put in second string second round, which may have been a mistake, ending the second match at 90 - 95 in the favor of team B. First string goes back in, and pulverizes the 3rd match in the last 2 minutes of the 10 minute round, ending the match at 165-125, in our favor.
Starting off the season with a 3-0 record is kinda sweet. Our last few years have not been so good in the record books, but this year, I think we may have something!
Good luck AC Academic Challenge Team!
