One time, at band camp....
Fellow JU bloggers! How's it going?
I'm writing this in live from the band camp that currently is hosting such JU favorites as Captain Cornbread, carebear07, and Zoologist03. Things have been kind of interesting here at Hocking Tech College. As of right now, carebear07 has been fighting over Brandon with a bunch of other band girls. It's been interesting since I'm rooming with him, and for the record, he has no comment on his current situation.
The food is crappy. That's putting it nicely. The dorms are always wet and very cold (I think the AC is on Super Max Ultra High), and have the distinct smell of OFF bug spray and mildew. To be painfully honest, I don't think that Hocking is a choice college for it's good dorm life or beautiful campus, but rather for it's inexpensive tuition. Right now, I'm accessing one of the Rec. Center's many computers, (Which are quite nice) to get this out to you live. We've got about a half of an hour for break after lunch untill we have to be at sectional practice. The show is half of the way on the field, marching and playing, so we're doing ok on the time constraints. Camp is almost half of the way done, so we don't have much time to get the rest of the show done by Friday.
Maybe I should explain myself on the last couple of lines of the last paragraph. Whilst at band camp, when we aren't sleeping, eating, or having a break, we are constantly at work on our half time show. This process is interesting, to say the least. Each member of the band gets a sheet of coordinates, which tell them where they have to be after so many measures in the music. At each coordinate, the band member puts down a poker chip as a marker, and then uses that chip to help them memorize the show. After working on the show for a while, we use our instruments to play the music along with the marching. All along the way we work on staying in straight lines, turns while marching and adjusted sized steps while marching. It's tough sometimes, but you get over it.
Band practice total is 8.5 hours a day, so a lot of time is spent working on our first half time show. Right now, I'm working right along side of Zoologist03, so shortly I'll link you to his article.
This has been a live report from band camp. Now back to you Bob.
Peace,
