This morning was another uneventful day at the farm... almost.

It seems we have a new farm resident. He has been uncerimoniously named "White Chocolate" for reasons unknown to me, and I've been taking to calling him "Buddy". He seems to be a lab-husky or lab-chow mix, and he is a nice dog, for the most part. He likes to get into things, and he chases cars, and farm equipment. Not a good thing, especially since we're in the middle of hay season. The hay tedder especially can cause any living creature to truly know the meaning of pain, and I'm afraid that he won't survive the summer.

Plus, Buddy is a male dog, probably not neutered, so he'll be running around peeing all over everything. Added to the fact that we have 3 female dogs. Great. Just great.

I can just imagine the little child saying,

"Oh mommy mommy, look at the puppy! Isn't he so cute?! Can't we have him. Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease?"

And mommy mommy just gets the cute little puppy, never mind the fact that she can't afford to take care of it.

And so, when the cute little puppy isn't cute anymore and he isn't little anymore and he isn't a puppy any more, he's a big drooling sappy dog that likes to chase cars. PLUS, little Billy or Bobby or Sue or whoever wanted the stupid thing in the first place doesn't like him anymore, and mommy mommy can't afford to feed him. So the first thing, around here, anyway, that comes to mommy mommy's mind is this:

"I can't take it to the pound, that'll cost me money. I know what I'll do! I'll drop it off at a farm somewhere. They'll take care of it."

It's this kind of throw away attitude that makes some farmers so irritated with people from town or the city. They honestly have no clue as to what a farm is, how it runs, and what happens at it. For instance, we have to move pieces of equipment around to take care of fields that cost more than a nice HOME!

Excuse me ma'am, that combine there is worth more than all your cars and your double-wide, so if you don't mind, would you kindly move off to the side of the road while we move by?

It amazes me that people can be so stupid. They just don't get it. Especially out on the roads, they'll fly right by us and do all sorts of stupid things. And then, they leave dogs, cats and any other assorted amount of pets out by our barns and houses, hoping that they won't have to deal with them ever again. They pass their problem on to us.

Well, excuse me for not being totally hospitable, but we don't need your problems! We've got our own! And, they aren't dog and cat expensive type problems. They're livelyhood problems. If your dumb mutt you dropped off gets caught up in a piece of equipment, that's a day we loose because we have to fix it. And a day lost can mean the difference in thousands of dollars.

So don't, ever, and I mean ever, drop off that dog at that farm down the way. We don't want it any more than you do, and it hanging around can mean a lot more than a few dollars in kibble.

Peace,

Beebes

Seeing what you wrote on my blog, I kind of expected this one.  And I support you fully!  I have never been a farmer, but count many as my friends.  Suffice it to say, I support you and would hope that while that cute little doggie in the window is no longer wanted, setting them loose is not the answer.

Some may find a home.  Most will either turn feral or starve to death.

My 3 cats were left at your place (figuratively).  I got them from the pound, cleaned them up and got them fixed.  The largest, Serena, is a love cat!  just ask my wife.

The male is a typical male.  He lets the smallest, Suzy (we did name them appropriately) lead him around by his nose!

But they are all nice cats, and I dont know why anyone would have left them on the side of the raod when there was willing adopteees!

Sorry, got off on a rant.  Carry on, and sorry some of us city folks are stupid.

I know what you mean Alex. We get that problem around here every now and then. Even me, being the animal lover I am, can not stand it when animals are dumped off at our place. Especially when people drop off a litter of cats. They go around and get the cats we have pregnant and pee on everything in sight.

The thing that ticks me off the most is when the animals that are dropped off go around and kill every bird, rabbit, mouse, etc and then just drop them off in our yard and just about everywhere around the house.

And I know we there's not a big farm running out here by my house anymore, but we still do some farming with big stuff. And it really sucks when some cat decides to crawl up under something and then when you turn that something on it gets spread through the whole thing and then you have to clean it out and sometimes fix whatever they decided to crawl up in.

As much as I feel sorry that the animal had to left and dumped like this, I hate it.

Dont ever lose that.  We all feel sorry for them,  I adopted 3.  I cannot adopt them all, and yes my heart bleeds for those I cannot save.

Bad thing is my ex is one of the worst on this!  She refuses (even tho the SPCA will do it for free) to neuter her animals and they are breeding.

I dont think it is a intellectual thing.  i think it is a lazy thing.  Pretty much what you and Beebes have seen.  They should be convicted!

I don't think I will ever lose it. I recently talked my mom into letting me get a new kitten. The only reason I took it was because, yea it was free, but the girl I got it from just looks like one of those people who would end up dumping it off at someone's farm if she couldn't get rid of it. I think it's going to be an inside cat, so we won't have a problem with it crawling up into things. And mom is also making me get her spade when she's old enough. So we won't have any little kitty problems.

So is she like one of those ladys who's gonna have 30 cats living with her when she's older?

I don't even see why people get animals that they're not going to be able to take care of in the long run. Even if it is cute, let someone who can take care of it, take it.

And you are how old?

You are wise beyond your years!  I am not worried about the next generation taking over as long as you are among them.

Just some. As long as Dr. Guy is here, there is no need to fear!

Yeah, it really bites. The worst part about it is I know sooner or later we're going to end up with puppies or something, and I definitely don't want or need that. *Sigh*

It's nice to see you reply Ash.

Ugh...I hate it when people drop off animals in the middle of nowhere...especially if that nowhere happens to be where I live. Just this last summer, someone got a bright idea to drop off a female cat...well, guess what?...We were crawling with kittens around here, and I fear it's going to happen again and again.

Darn city folk pushin' their problems on us....

Hey Beebles, as someone who grew up on a working dairy farm I know exactly where your coming from on this and YES it sucks! I have long wished there was something that could be done to them for just dropping the animals.
